Understanding Your Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth

When you reach your late teens or early twenties, you may be surprised by the emergence of new teeth. Your wisdom teeth are located in the back of your mouth, and they may or may not erupt normally. If they grow in at odd angles, they may crowd your other teeth. In many cases, the impacted wisdom teeth that are trapped in the jaw can’t erupt at all. If this happens, you may experience symptoms such as wisdom teeth pain, swelling, and infection. Impacted wisdom teeth remain fully or partially trapped beneath gum tissue. They are unable to erupt normally due to their position in the jaw.

In many cases, there are no symptoms present, but the following may occur and should be reported to your dentist:

  • Evidence of tooth crowding
  • Infected, swollen gum tissue covering impacted wisdom teeth
  • Irritation of your tongue, gums or mouth due to a wisdom tooth erupting at an awkward angle
  • Jaw pain and stiffness
  • Tooth decay, gingivitis, or periodontitis

If you have wisdom teeth pain or other symptoms, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away. Here are a few tips for dealing with wisdom teeth pain and swelling until you can get medical attention.

  • For face and jaw pain, use an over-the-counter pain reliever. Never place an aspirin directly onto your gums; this can damage the tissues and cause even more pain.
  • Apply ice to the outside of your cheek for approximately 20 minutes. Remove it for 20 minutes, and repeat the process as needed. Don’t use heat.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water every two hours.

Depending on your age and your oral health, wisdom teeth removal may be your best option. Some dentists recommend wisdom teeth removal before the age of 20 even if no symptoms are present. Removing wisdom teeth later in life presents a higher risk of complications like infection and nerve damage. Your family dentistry expert can determine if having your impacted wisdom teeth removed is appropriate.
