Advanced Smile Restoration – Find Out if Dental Implants are Right for You
If you’ve suffered tooth loss, dental implant surgery is a great way to restore your smile. Implantation involves replacing tooth roots with metal screws that fuse with your jawbone, and serve as anchors for artificial teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants won’t loosen, slip, make sounds or contribute to tooth decay or bone loss.
Dental implant surgery occurs in the following stages and may take many months, but the success rate is high and the best dental implants may last up to 40 years.
- Any damaged teeth are extracted.
- The jawbone is prepared.
- The implant metal post is placed into your jaw.
- The jaw is allowed to heal for several months to fuse to the implant.
- An abutment (an extension) is attached to the implant.
- The implant is completed with a crown.
Candidates for Dental Implants. A good candidate for implants has healthy jawbone available in the area where each implant is needed. Bone grafts may be an option for those who don’t. Healthy gums and good general health are also preferable.
Replacement of Multiple Teeth. Multiple individual implants are one option, but full or partial implant dentures may be a more practical choice. Both fixed and removable implant dentures can be anchored to your jawbone by an implant.
Risks with Dental Implant Surgery. The surgery poses minor risks of infection, damage to teeth or blood vessels, nerve damage, and sinus problems, but most complications are easily treated.
Preparation for Surgery. Before your surgery, your dentist will take x-rays and make models of your teeth or mouth. After a thorough evaluation, a treatment plan is made, and you’ll have the opportunity to discuss pain control and anesthesia options with your dentist.
After Dental Implant Surgery. Facial swelling, bruising, pain, and bleeding may occur after surgery. Pain medicines or antibiotics may be required. You’ll probably have to eat a soft diet for a week or two while you heal. For the best long-term results, get regular dental check-ups, and practice excellent oral hygiene.
